No. 3 ❧ Summer 2022
Why Trees?
Issue No. 3 was created during a Fellowship at Epicenter (Green River, Utah). “Why Trees?” loosely focuses on a grove of Fremont cottonwood trees in Pearl Baker Park, part of Canal Commons, Epicenter’s affordable housing initiative. Upon inquiring about the grove, Tree News was directed to better trees (“you’ll know it when you see it”), “shit trees”, trees of personal significance and the memories of those who planted them. Issue No. 3 is a meandering document of place, land, and community goals, challenges and concerns.

In addition to Issue No. 3, Tree News organized a botanical film collage and direct animation workshop with youth in the PACT Summer Camp and Teen Center. K-5 campers drew directly on super 8mm film while teens spent two afternoon sessions visiting sites around Green River gathering plants and other materials to collage onto film. The film was spliced together and screened for the public at Epicenter. See more below.
